Strawberry Basil Lemonade Cocktail

So, I have a confession to make. I’m an addict. Well, I’m addicted. To this cocktail. Please don’t think less of me. I was at Houlihan’s (a local restaurant chain) a few weeks ago and saw a lemonade concoction on their menu that used gin, strawberries, and basil. I love basil and strawberries, so I thought I might really regret it if I didn’t at least give the drink a try. DE-LIC-IOUS. The only problem with the drink was that I didn’t have unending refills of it when I got home, so I decided to remedy that little issue as soon as possible. It actually didn’t take long at all to unlock the sweet summer flavor at home, here’s what you’ll need:

Fresh basil leaves
Fresh strawberries
Lemonade
Gin
Simple Syrup

For one drink, slice two strawberries and muddle them together with two medium basil leaves in the bottom of your glass.

On top of your strawberry/basil mixture, add 2 parts lemonade and 1 part gin. We made MinuteMaid frozen lemonade, but it would be extra delish to make your own lemonade from scratch. Add a dash of simple syrup to taste, and you are ready to sip your summery goodness!

We made these for a recent party and it really helped to prepare a batch of the muddled strawberries and basil and the lemonade/gin/simple syrup mixture right before the gathering started. That way, we could just scoop our strawberry concoction into a glass and pour the spiked lemonade right on top.

I guess you all know what I’ll be drinking this summer, cheers!

Laura Loves: Skull Edition

Skulls- everybody who’s anybody has one. I mean you LITERALLY have to have one to be considered a someone. Oh, sure, there are creatures like jellyfish that don’t have skulls, but you don’t see them on the cover of People magazine’s “Most Beautiful” edition, now do you?

My birthday was almost two weeks ago now, but I got two pretty sweet skull presents amidst the birthday booty. One was a skull bracelet from my brother and his girlfriend, and the other was number 5 on my skull roundup this week- a silver metallic skull from Z Gallerie courtesy of Todd. It’s actually glittering before me as I type this, sitting on my desk with its hollow sparkly eyes fixed upon me. Awesome.

Obviously, there’s still plenty of delightful skull treasure out there that I don’t own yet, so here’s a few of my top finds for this week: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

If you’re ever feeling low or down on yourself, just think, “I have a skull. I’m a SOMEBODY!”

Filing Cabinet Restyle

So, Todd has been out all this week in New Orleans writing and recording for the band’s new record. It’s no secret to those to know me that I can be somewhat of a pessimist about situations in life, but Todd is the biggest easy-going optimist you could ever dream up, so that has helped balance me out over the years. I’m always sad to see him leave (of course), but it does help to think of the time that he’s gone as an opportunity to get some things done on my project list and watch all my tv shows that he hates (Kim and Kourtney Take Miami, anyone??).

One of those recent projects was this makeover on a filing cabinet I found at the flea market. It came in this lovely pink color that I adored, but the hue didn’t work with its intended locale in the house, so I needed to rethink the paint job. Storage is always an issue in a home (especially in an art studio type of setting), so I decided that this vintage filing cabinet could help me house a good portion of my paints that are currently stuffed out in the garage.

All the cabinet needed in prep work was a light coat of sanding with a medium grit sandpaper. Once I wiped down the sanded paint dust, it was ready for the transformation.

I chose the Glidden color True Turquoise in a latex paint for extra durability and ended up doing two coats for full coverage.

Thankfully, I was able to wiggle the drawers out of the cabinet before I painted, which made the whole process much easier.

Seriously though, there are few things that I love more than storage that looks good. I left the little company tag on the top drawer to keep some of the vintage charm, but I’m really pleased at how fresh and bright the cabinet turned out.

If you need some storage, filing cabinets are a great way to get organized and there are various shapes and sizes all over the flea market world. Todd will be home tomorrow, so I’m trying to finish any projects tonight so we can spend some relaxing time together this weekend. Can’t wait!

Black Jumpsuit

Well, the work week is now officially in full swing, but my brain is stuck on last weekend. It was one of those weekends that was packed with good weather, outings with Todd, and fun gatherings with friends-I just didn’t want it to end!

Todd threw me a surprise pizza party for my birthday on Friday night and we made the most realistic “kitty litter box cake” I could ever imagine (check out a photo of it on my Instagram @gummergal). It looked totally nasty, but tasted delish! Saturday we invited over the whole crew from A Beautiful Mess to hang out at our house and drink Strawberry Basil Lemonade cocktails. You guys, I’m totally obsessed with this drink! I’ll post a recipe soon, I promise…Finally, Sunday was actually a pretty busy day of running around at flea markets with my guy while drinking a Starbucks frappe the size of my head. Thankfully, in addition to my sugar rush, we did score a metal outdoor table that’s my current DIY project of the moment. I can’t wait to get it completed!

Anyways, in all that fun and chaos, I decided to pull out my BCBG jumpsuit for the cocktail party on Saturday. If you don’t own a jumper, then you probably don’t know that they are the outfit equivalent of French bread covered in Nutella- in other words, the best thing ever. They are super comfy, and with the range of motion that they allow,  you can show off your amazing splits skills while still looking rather sophisticated at the same time.

Jumpsuit/BCBG, Shoes/Steve Madden, Necklace/Virgins, Saint, and Angels, Bracelets/Aldo

I can’t do a split, but if I could, that’s what the last picture would have been. I’ll have to settle for hoping you’re impressed that I can stand on one leg in five inch heels long enough to take a picture. You’re not? I take it back. I totally can do a split. I just don’t feel like it right now…

Let’s Talk About Cats

One of two things happened when you saw the title of this post. You either said, “YESSS!” and did a happy dance, or you said, “Whatever! I’ll come back later when you are talking about a real animal-like a DOG!” The cat vs. dog debate has been going on since Fred Flintstone was putting out their prehistoric feline every night, but I really don’t have anything bad to say about dogs or the owners who love them. I may have fought you on the point of which animal is “better” overall a few years ago, but I think I’ve come to realize that people just want different things out of pet ownership and those differences usually dictate which type of pet they prefer. I am obviously a self-proclaimed cat connoisseur (all the pictures are of our kitty Charlie), and I’ll sum up my few tops reasons as to why:

1.) Cats do their “business” inside. Now this may seem like a negative feature to some that think it’s gross, but unless that objector also has an outhouse (rather than indoor plumbing) for their own personal use, then I don’t really get that argument. Also, who wants to take Fido for a walk and a tinkle break in the middle of winter? Not me. Live ten flights up in a sky-rise apartment? Well, Rex needs a fire hydrant NOW, so you better get to stepping then, shouldn’t you? That’s what I thought.

2.) Cats are chillaxin’ 99% of the time. Ever walked into a house to have a dog the size of a small donkey knock you over with their enthusiasm before they hump every available corner of your body while you silently weep for your stolen innocence and youth? Cats don’t do that when they see you. Oh, sure, you may get an icy cat stare from under the bed at your friend’s house, but I’ll take that over a “slow-motion-slobberfest-like-that-one-scene-in-the-Beetoven-the-dog-movie-when-he-shakes-his-head-and-slobber-is-going-everywhere-and-I-mean-EV-ER-Y-WHERE” type of greeting any day of the week.

3.) Cats need “me time.” Again, this is another point that may not sound like a plus at first, but the truth is that I need “me time” too, so it actually works out really well. I love that there are times when Charlie is a total doll-face and follows me from room to room just to keep me company or naps with me on the couch for hours at a time. I also love that I don’t feel bad if I’m not with her every moment because I know that she also likes to take sleep on and off throughout the day, watch birds out the window, or just hide under our bed because she wants to be alone. She’s with us when she wants to be and retreats when she doesn’t feel like hanging out. Being an introvert myself, I can understand that need to recharge after a certain amount of interaction, so I never feel smothered by her and vice versa.

Anyway, these thoughts are obviously generalizations of both the feline and canine species, and your animal experience depends more on the personality of that particular pet rather than the actual category in which it belongs. I have met some mean cats and angelic dogs, so I really do love members of both camps, but I’ll probably only be a cat owner for the reasons listed above.

It’s totally ok if you’re not a “cat person,” but I am, and there’s a sleeping gray furball on my lap as I type this post and that’s just the way I like it.
